Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is Ashtanga Mysore-style yoga?
Mysore-style is the traditional method of practicing Ashtanga yoga, as taught in Mysore, India. Students practice a set sequence of postures at their own pace, with individual guidance and adjustments from the teacher. Unlike led classes, the Mysore room is quiet, with each student moving with their own breath.
2. I’m a complete beginner — can I join?
Absolutely. Mysore-style is perfect for beginners because you receive one-on-one instruction tailored to your level. You’ll learn gradually, step by step, building a safe and strong foundation.
3. Do I need to memorize the sequence?
Not at all — that comes with time and practice. The teacher will guide you daily, and over time, your memory and confidence will grow naturally. Usually, on your first class you will learn only the sequence of Surya Namaskara and a few closing postures.
4. What time should I arrive for Mysore class?
Mysore classes typically have a window of time for self-practice. You may arrive any time within that window, allowing yourself enough time to complete your practice. For example, if our morning class is 6:30 - 8:00am and the second one follows right after 8:00am 9:30am it means that you can come to shala anytime between 6:30am - 8:30am - just to make sure that you finish the practice before the closure around 9:45am.
If you are joining evening mysore (6:00pm - 8:00pm) you can come for your first class anytime between 6:00pm and 6:30pm.
5. How often should I practice?
Traditionally, Ashtanga is practiced six days a week, with one rest day a week (Saturday or Sunday) + extra two rest days per month which fall on moon days. Women are additionally advised to take 2-4 days off from practice during their menstruation, to allow the downward moving flow of energy during this period leave the body without obstructions.
If you are a beginner, start with 3–4 days per week and build it from there.
6. What should I bring to class?
Bring your yoga mat if you are coming for the first time, bring a thin long towel for adjustments, and a small cloth if you tend to sweat. We recommend that each student who already practice seated postures of primary series uses a Mysore Cotton Rug. While we do not offer storage of cotton rugs, you can store your yoga mat at the shala. There is a one time fee of 50$ for that.
If you need to borrow a yoga, let us know in advance.
7. What are moon days, and why don’t we practice then?
New and full moon days are traditional rest days in the Ashtanga system. They are seen as energetically potent times, and taking rest supports both the body and mind in alignment with nature’s rhythms. Upcoming moon days will be posted in the Shala and on our website.
8. What’s the difference between Mysore class and a Led class?
In a Mysore class, each student practices at their own pace with individual guidance. In a Led class, the teacher leads everyone together through the sequence, syncing movement and breath. Led classes help refine rhythm and group energy, while Mysore allows for deeper personal exploration.
9. Can I join mid-month or mid-week?
Yes. We welcome new students at any time.
10. Is this a spiritual practice or just physical?
While Ashtanga yoga is a strong physical discipline, it is also a path toward inner stillness and self-awareness. Breath, concentration, and discipline are all tools to access a deeper connection to yourself. Many practitioners, after several years of dedicated practice, discover and experience the spiritual aspects of it too.
11. Do you offer trial classes?
We offer a One-Week Intro Pass (69$) and 10 Classes Trial Pass (250$) for new students to experience the Mysore method. This gives you time to feel the rhythm of the practice and see if it’s right for you.
